The Folly of trusting in Human Wisdom

INTRODUCTION

1. Today we are faced with many issues over which people disagree...
a. Moral issues related to what is good or evil
b. Doctrinal issues related to what is right or wrong

2. It is not uncommon to hear people appeal to certain "authorities"...
a. Those considered experts in the areas of science, philosophy, and
religion
b. Who share the results of their experiments, research, or careful
thinking

3. Many place their faith in such "authorities"...
a. Especially in areas of morality and spiritual truth
b. Is that a wise thing to do?

[In our text for this lesson (1Co 1:18-31), the apostle Paul warns
against "The Folly Of Trusting In Human Wisdom".  In this passage of
Scripture we learn that...]

Christ the Wisdom and Power of God
1 Corinthians 1;18-24
“18For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 22For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.”

The Foolish to Shame the Wise
1 Corinthians 1:25-31
“25Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 27But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29That no flesh should glory in his presence. 30But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 31That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.”

I. GOD HAS MADE FOOLISH THE WISDOM OF THE WISE

A. CONSIDER THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS...
1. I.e., the idea of a crucified Savior, dying for the sins of the
world
2. To those who are perishing, it is foolishness
3. To those being saved, it is the power of God! (1 Corinthians 1:18)

B. THE FOOLISHNESS OF THE MESSAGE IS BY DESIGN...
1. God proclaimed that He would destroy the wisdom of the wise
2. God has made foolish the wisdom of this world
3. Why?  Because the world in its own wisdom rejects God
a.    We see that in the idolatry of Paul's day
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.”

b. We see it today in the theories of evolution, humanism,
immorality
4. So God chose to save man through faith in a message that seems
foolish
a. While the Jews were seeking signs, and the Greeks sought
after wisdom
b. But for those who accept the call of the message of Christ
crucified, there is both power and wisdom! –
c. For God's foolishness is wiser than man, His weakness
stronger than man
C. THUS NOT MANY WISE, MIGHTY, NOBLE ARE CALLED...
1. At Corinth, there were not many wise (according to the flesh),
mighty, noble who had responded to the call of the gospel
2. The same is true today:  those receptive to the gospel are
usually not the wise, mighty, noble
3. Again, this is part of God's design to shame the arrogant
wisdom and might of those who reject God
4. Otherwise, the wise and mighty would boast of themselves in the
presence of God
[This should make us cautious about anything based solely on the wisdom
or strength of man.  Man in his wisdom and strength cannot begin to
compare to the foolishness and weakness of God!  Thus...]

II. WE SHOULD BOAST IN THE LORD, NOT MAN

A. FOR IN A CRUCIFIED, RISEN SAVIOR...
1. There is to be found wisdom from God
“In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
2. There is both righteousness and sanctification
“And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:”

3. There is redemption from sin
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”
B. THUS WE SHOULD GLORY IN THE LORD...
1. Just as it written in the Scriptures
“31That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.”

2. Not in our own wisdom, might, or riches
“Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:”

3. But in understanding and knowing God, who delights in
lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth
“But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.”

C. PAUL PROVIDES HIMSELF AS AN EXAMPLE...
1. He had plenty of reasons to boast in himself
“For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: 14And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.”

“Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: 5Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 6Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.”

2. Yet he counted such things as dung, in comparison to the
excellence of knowing Christ and His salvation
“But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.”

3. Thus his boast was in the cross of Christ
“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”

D. IN WHAT DO YOU BOAST...?
1. You may think yourself wise, strong, or self-sufficient because
of your wealth
2. You may think others worthy to guide you in matters of truth
and morality
3. But unless it is ultimately the Lord who guides us, it is
folly!

In Everything Give Thanks

Psalm 63:3-4
“Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.”

I. THE NEED TO GIVE THANKS

A. INGRATITUDE DISPLEASES GOD...
1. It is included among other sins that would be prevalent in
"perilous times"
“1This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
2. The wrath of God will be revealed against those who are
unthankful
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

B. WE ARE TO HAVE THE ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE...
1. Thankful for what the Father has done for us
“Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”

2. Abounding in thanksgiving
“Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

3. A part of the "garment" we are to put on
“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”
4. A complement to our prayers
“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;”

C. THANKFULNESS IS KEY...
1. To overcoming anxiety
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

2. To obtaining the peace of God which surpasses understanding
“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

3. To pray without ceasing, and to rejoicing always
“Rejoice evermore. 17Pray without ceasing. 18In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

a. When we give thanks in everything, we will pray without
ceasing!
b. When we pray without ceasing, we will rejoice always!
4. NB:  thankfulness in everything -> praying without ceasing ->
rejoicing always!

[If we desire to have the peace which passes understanding, that joy
which is inexpressible
(1Peter 1:8)” Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:”
, then we need to develop the attitude
of gratitude, being thankful in everything!  Some thoughts on...]

II. HOW TO BE THANKFUL IN EVERYTHING

A. REMEMBER THAT ALL THINGS WORK FOR GOOD...
1. If we love God and have responded to His call
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

a.  Loving God presumes obedience to His will
“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”
b.  Responding to His call presumes obeying the gospel
“But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: 14Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

2. We can therefore glory in tribulation
“3And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
a. Knowing that it produces character
b. Which in turn produces hope
3. We can therefore rejoice in persecution
“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”

a. Knowing that the kingdom of heaven is ours
b. Knowing that our reward in heaven will be great
4. We can therefore rejoice in trials
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”

a. Knowing that trials produces patience
b. Knowing that patience produces perfection and completeness
(maturity)

B. EXPRESS THANKS IN EVERY PRAYER...
1. We are to include thanksgiving with our prayer requests
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

a. Every time you pray for something, first thank God for
something
b. "Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done."
- Johnson Oatman, Jr., 1856-1922
2. Even when we are facing hard times
“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. 11Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.”

a. Daniel made the giving of thanks part of his daily prayers
b. Even when facing life-threatening crisis, he gave thanks as
always

Developing the Fruits of the Spirit

Galatians 5:16-26
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.25If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.”

In principle, we must...

•      Walk in the Spirit
Galatians 5:16
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

•      Be led by the Spirit
Galatians 5:18
“But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.”

•      Live in the Spirit
Galatians 5:25
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

Romans 8:5
“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.”

Romans 8:12-14
“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

In practice, we must...
•      Be born again
John 3:3
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

•      Meditate on the Word
Ephesians 6:17
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”

•      Pray for the Spirit’s aid
Ephesians 3:16
“That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;”
 Romans 15:13
“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”

•      Sing with grace
Colossians 3:16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

**If you would like to give your heart to Jesus today, repeat these words below:

'Dear Heavenly Father,i come to in the name of Jesus; Forgive me a sinner and wash me in your precious blood. Make this heart of stone to be made flesh, so that your word may be sown in it. And from this day forward, i commit my life to you and seek for guidance and understanding in your word, as i walk in your path of righteousness, In Jesus name i pray, AMEN!!!'

If you have recited these words and meant them in your heart, you are saved and if the Lord would come today, you will be ready to go to Heaven!!
